# estrategIA’s “electoral” experiment: generative artificial intelligence as the creator and promoter of a new political party

A few weeks ago, **Pablo Martín**, academic director of the ALEPH Educational Institution and editor of this *newsletter*, **mentioned to me the possibility of creating a political party with AI and entering it in the European elections due to take place this June**. We thought the idea was interesting. Setting aside the complex legal process of making it “real”, we proposed doing it simply as an academic experiment to describe in this *newsletter*. That would let us see, given the current state of artificial intelligence — still very early in its development, but evolving very quickly — what we could do directly using AI, and how good the results would be.



With this in mind, we began the actual process of creating a party and candidates, working on all of this from scratch with the AIs currently available. **To avoid creating a party entirely out of thin air, we decided to give it a couple of guiding principles: it should be pro-European, which is quite interesting and even logical for European elections, and, to give it a distinctive feature, its principles should be based on Stoicism**. This is a philosophy [I personally know in some depth](https://www.instagram.com/estoicismo_diario/), so I can judge whether what the AI generates is reasonable and appropriate.



From this starting point, at estrategIA we began the process of generating a party and candidates for the European elections, and developing various key elements of their campaign. **In this first issue, we are going to generate the party, its name, mission, vision and values, some of its main general policy proposals, a logo and, finally, even a simple party website, all generated directly with artificial intelligence.**



We began by working through the initial questions with GPT-4:



## 1. The party’s name



> Act as a renowned political consultant specialising in branding and electoral strategy, with a deep knowledge of European political culture and Stoic philosophy. Generate five exceptional and compelling name options for a new pro-European political party, founded on Stoic principles, that intends to stand in Spain in the 2024 European Parliament elections. Make sure each proposed name is innovative, faithfully reflects the party’s values and principles, and has strong potential to resonate with and attract Spanish voters, highlighting the importance of European unity and Stoic wisdom. (That is exactly the **prompt** used in GPT-4.)



When creating names for a new political party seeking to integrate a pro-European outlook with Stoic philosophy, it is essential to approach the task using a method that ensures the proposed names align with the party’s fundamental principles and values. Stoic philosophy, centred on virtue, self-control and understanding what is within our power to change, offers a rich seam of concepts and terminology that can be creatively adapted to resonate in the European political context. This approach must both reflect the party’s unique identity and distinguish it within the Spanish and European political spectrum, appealing to the values of unity, rationality and moral strength.



**Creative and strategic process**



1. Conceptual analysis: integrating Stoic principles with pro-European values suggests a search for harmony between ancient wisdom and modern ideals of cooperation and unity. Fortitude, rationality, justice and community are the pillars on which the names will be based.

2. Cultural and linguistic relevance: ensure the names are culturally resonant and linguistically accessible to the Spanish electorate, making the party easier to identify and remember.

3. Strategic differentiation: the names should be clearly distinguishable from those already present in Spanish politics, avoiding confusion and highlighting the party’s distinctive proposals.

4. Emotional and rational appeal: consider a balance between emotional appeal, which can create an immediate connection with voters, and rational appeal, which reinforces the seriousness and depth of the party’s political and philosophical commitments.



**Proposed names**



1. Europa Estoica Unida (EEU; United Stoic Europe): directly reflects the integration of Stoic philosophy with the European project, suggesting a union founded on moral strength and wisdom.

2. Razón y Virtud para Europa (RVE; Reason and Virtue for Europe): highlights the Stoic principles of rationality and virtue as foundations for building a stronger, fairer Europe.

3. Pórtico Europeo (PE; European Portico): inspired by the Portico in Athens where the Stoics met, it symbolises a meeting place for dialogue and reflection in support of a united Europe.

4. Causa Común Europea (CCE; European Common Cause): emphasises the vision of a European community united by shared values, reflecting both the Stoic ideal of working for the common good and the goal of European integration.

5. Séneca Europeo (SE; European Seneca): taking the name of one of the most illustrious Stoics, this name embodies wisdom and moral strength applied to European unity and cooperation.



Each of these names has been designed to capture the essence of a party seeking to combine the philosophical richness of Stoicism with the project of European integration. They are intended to resonate with the Spanish electorate, offering a clear, distinctive proposition that highlights rationality, justice and transnational cooperation.



**We chose the first: Europa Estoica Unida (EEU).**



## 2. The party’s mission, vision and values



> Think step by step. Act as a distinguished political consultant with extensive experience in formulating communication and branding strategies for political parties, specialising in bringing together profound philosophies and contemporary political ideals. Develop the mission, vision and values of the party “Europa Estoica Unida” (EEU), effectively encapsulating the essence of integrating Stoic philosophy with the ideal of a united Europe. Your approach should reflect how moral strength and Stoic wisdom can provide the foundation for a more cohesive and resilient European union. Make sure each element (mission, vision, values) is clearly defined, inspiring, and resonates with both adherents of Stoic philosophy and supporters of the European project, promoting a message of unity, moral strength and practical wisdom in the current political context.

“To promote a united and resilient Europe, founded on the Stoic principles of wisdom, justice and self-control, to create a fairer, more equitable and sustainable society. Europa Estoica Unida is dedicated to encouraging dialogue, cooperation and peace among all European nations, ensuring that every decision is taken with foresight, integrity and the common good at its centre.”



### Vision



“To build a European future in which every individual and nation acts from a position of moral strength, rationality and compassion, overcoming differences and challenges through practical wisdom and mutual understanding. Europa Estoica Unida aspires to be a catalyst for a Europe that not only prospers economically, but also stands out for its commitment to social justice, sustainability and respect for human dignity in all its forms.”



### Values



**Wisdom:** we promote decision-making based on knowledge, deep understanding and a long-term perspective, considering the wellbeing of all European citizens.



**Justice:** we commit to working tirelessly for equality, equity and social justice in all our policies and practices, ensuring that every voice is heard and valued.



**Self-control:** we encourage political debate and action guided by reason and self-control, avoiding impulsive decisions or those influenced by passing emotions.



**Fortitude:** we strive to approach challenges with courage and resilience, inspiring others to do the same in the search for sustainable and peaceful solutions.



**Cosmopolitanism:** we embrace diversity and promote European unity, recognising our shared responsibility towards the continent and beyond, in a spirit of global fraternity.



Every element of Europa Estoica Unida’s mission, vision and values is designed to reflect how Stoic wisdom and principles can inform and strengthen European governance and cooperation, promoting a fairer, more resilient and united continent.



## 3. The party’s core public policy proposals



> Act as an experienced political consultant specialising in designing and developing public policy, with a particular focus on integrating philosophical principles with pragmatic political strategies. Formulate three to five core public policy proposals that “Europa Estoica Unida” (EEU) would promote to strengthen the European Union from its platform in Spain. Each proposal should reflect the distinctive fusion of Stoic philosophy — centred on wisdom, temperance, justice and courage — with the goal of building a more united, resilient and morally strong Europe. Make sure these policies address key aspects such as European integration, sustainability, social and economic cohesion, and diplomacy, demonstrating how Stoic values can guide effective and ethical political decisions for the common good of the European Union.



In formulating public policy proposals for Europa Estoica Unida (EEU), it is vital to consider how the Stoic principles of wisdom, temperance, justice and courage can inform and guide a pragmatic and ethical political approach to the European Union’s contemporary challenges. Applying these philosophical principles should focus on promoting greater European integration, sustainability, social and economic cohesion, and effective diplomacy, ensuring that all policies reflect a commitment to the common good and resilience in the face of future challenges.



### Proposal 1: a European Climate Resilience Pact based on wisdom and temperance



**Objective:** to promote environmental sustainability and adaptation to climate change throughout Europe, drawing on wisdom to recognise our interdependence with the environment and on temperance to moderate our consumption and production.



**Description:** this pact seeks to unite Member States around advanced sustainability policies, encouraging the green economy, renewable energy and energy efficiency. It would promote investment in clean technology and innovation, as well as environmental education, inspired by the Stoic principle of living in harmony with nature.



### Proposal 2: a European Social Justice and Economic Equity Initiative



**Objective:** to strengthen social and economic cohesion in the EU, ensuring that all citizens have access to fair and equitable opportunities, in line with Stoic principles of justice and equity.



**Description:** this initiative would focus on policies that reduce economic and social inequality, such as European tax harmonisation to ensure that companies contribute fairly, and the introduction of a European minimum wage. It would also promote education and training programmes accessible to everyone, ensuring that social mobility becomes a reality throughout the Union.



### Proposal 3: a Europe United for Digital Temperance Programme



**Objective:** to address the challenges and risks associated with technology and digitalisation, encouraging more mindful and moderate use of technology in keeping with the Stoic principle of temperance.



**Description:** this programme would seek to balance the benefits of digitalisation with the need to protect citizens’ mental and physical health, privacy and personal data. It would include stricter regulations on data use, campaigns to raise awareness of digital wellbeing, and support for technologies that promote collective wellbeing.



### Proposal 4: a Stoic Diplomacy and Peace Forum



**Objective:** to strengthen Europe’s role as a global mediator and advocate for peace, drawing on Stoic courage to face conflict and wisdom to resolve it peacefully and constructively.



**Description:** this forum would be dedicated to promoting active diplomacy and dialogue among nations, working towards conflict resolution and a more peaceful and cooperative international community. The EU would lead peace missions, treaty negotiations and development assistance programmes, reflecting its commitment to a foreign policy that values justice and global wellbeing.



### Proposal 5: a European Alliance for Community Cohesion



**Objective:** to promote unity and solidarity among Member States and their citizens, inspired by Stoic cosmopolitanism, which recognises everyone’s interconnectedness and interdependence.



**Description:** this alliance would focus on programmes that encourage cultural understanding and exchange among EU countries, including educational initiatives promoting multilingualism, student and labour mobility, and joint cultural projects celebrating Europe’s diversity and cultural richness.



After this conceptual work with GPT-4, we tried asking different AIs to generate a logo for the party.



## 4. The party’s logo



We started with GPT-4 itself and its DALL-E image generator. The result was interesting, although it did not get the text right:

We also tried a custom GPT proto-agent called “logo creator”, but the results did not convince us at all.



As we also have a paid subscription to Midjourney, very probably the best image generator currently available, we tried that too. With a prompt as simple as “a high-quality logo for a political party called ‘Europa Estoica Unida’”, it generated four initial results, one of which we liked quite a lot:

We also tested a couple of AI logo-generation websites and, in our experience, their results are rather generic. These, for example, are from:

Finally, because of its ability to generate text well, we also tried [Ideogram](https://ideogram.ai/), which is also free. Although it can generate logos with the correct text, we found its designs considerably less imaginative and creative than Midjourney’s:

## 5. A general website for the party



Finally, we decided to try one of the many largely automatic AI website generators we had heard good things about, and it did quite an interesting job:

For this proof of concept, all we had to do was enter the party’s name and a six-line description based on the mission we had generated. In less than a minute, it produced the following result. We changed a couple of section headings into Spanish; the rest is just as it was generated:

**When we went to publish the landing page for free, it changed the images. We uploaded some simple, general images on the subject that we had already generated**, and achieved a fairly decent result, considering that the entire process, including replacing the images, took less than three minutes. **You can see the website here:**

We now have the basics of our new AI-created party. Next week, we will generate the candidates for the European Parliament and take our first steps with them.
